A politically tendentious collection whose merit is that most of its quotations don't appear in other reference books. If you need an adoring phrase about Lenin or a not-too-overworked way to insult conservatism, this is a good place to start. Ignore the puerile front matter - even if you're a lefty: It will embarrass you. ( )

I have spent many, many hours re-reading this book. You can spend an hour contemplating just one quote out of the thousands Seldes has compiled. I have never found a book of quotations that holds a candle to this one. ( )

George Seldes was an amazing guy, a freelance journalist who really did "tell truth to power," and this is much more interesting than most collections of quotations.
