Arranged chronologically in folders covering 6- or 12-month periods. Correspondence for the period 1922-27 is missing and is reported to have been lost during one of the moves of the Commission. PROJECT FILES. 1910-52. 125 ft. 6 Correspondence and papers concerning individual completed projects which were considered by the Commission and subsequently became "closed cases." A project case file usually contains memoranda and correspondence with artists, contractors, and Government officials; newspaper and magazine clippings; copies of maps, drawings, plans and sketches, pamphlets, and bulletins; and copies of legislative material affecting the various projects. Arranged alphabetically by name of project and thereunder chronologically. A complete list of the completed projects appears as appendix I of this inventory, alphabetized on the basis of case titles originally assigned by the Commission. Scrapbooks maintained in connection with major projects and a number of oversized maps, blueprints, and drawings which relate to these projects are described in entries 7 and 10, respectively. Arranged alphabetically by name of project. The project files to which these scrapbooks relate are described in entry 6. SHIPSTEAD-LUCE ACT CASES. 1930-52. 25 ft. 8 100 Individual case files consisting of applications by individuals or organizations for permission to alter or erect residences or business places, and to erect, repair, or repaint advertising signs. A typical case file includes drawings, designs, blueprints, plans, and related correspondence. Illustrations of important projects included in this file are the Acacia Life Insurance building, the Shoreham Hotel, the Evening Star building, the American Pharmaceutical Association building, the Imperial Japanese Embassy, and a very large number of apartment buildings. Arranged numerically by individual case file from 1 through 1449 and in a group of "special" case files not a part of the numbered series. The numbered cases originated in the office of the District of Columbia Inspector of Buildings where they received their numerical designations before being forwarded to the Commission for action. The "special" cases consist of applications received directly from private sources by the Commission. ENGRAVED COPPER PLATES. n.d. 4 in. 9 Six wooden-backed engraved copper plates used in illustrating reports of the Commission. Four of the plates show a "Diagram of the Land Near the Capitol," and the other two are views of an unidentified memorial column. OVERSIZED MATERIALS. 1910-42. 8 ft. 10 Maps, blueprints, photostats, drawings, and photographs of certain projects considered by the Commission (see entry 6) that were filed separately because of their large size.
