An ardent disciple of Isaak Walton went to the polls to vote on the bond issue. He looked down the list of items, finding nothing to arouse his interest until he came to the Aquarium. He voted for that. Further perusal disclosed the Waterworks Extension project. He figured it would be necessary to have plenty of water for the fish, so he voted for the Waterworks, and went home with the rainbow in his heart that comes from duty well performed. When I was young and full of prunes I loved to roam among the dunes, where crooned the azure breezes dank along the old canalski bank. I loved to stand and gaze and sigh and watch the crawfish amble by, and knock the whiskers off their bills with railroad spikes and other pills. Ah, hist! gay moonrise days of yore! It certainly does make me sore to realize that thou art past-that youthhood's pleasure all are gassed. Alone I sit upon my step. Oh, wouldst but didst I have some pep! But no! My frame is full of rust, and soon I'll croak-blow up and bust! The following extract is from a letter to us by Enoch Ohnstrand, Chief Engineer, LIBRARY BUREAU, Ilion, N. Y. "We figure that this repair on this machine showed a sufficient saving to pay for the installation of our electric equipment, as the machine which was broken down was a special machine made years ago for this Company, and even if it had been an up-to-date machine, we could not have purchased this part for anywhere near the price of the electric welder which we pur chased from you and which we used for doing this work. I am pleased to advise you that we got splendid results from the job and in a very short time. The repairs, so far as welding was concerned, were made in about three hours actual time." General Electric General Office Schenectady.N.Y Company Sales Offices in all large cities 43B-711C Library THE JOURNAL OF THE ASSOCIATED ENGINEERING SOCIETIES OF ST. LOUIS APRIL, 1923 The particular contribution of the engineer to the world's work lies in the fact that his is a constant spirit of inquiry, of a pioneering endeavor to bring the experience and exact knowledge of the past to apply to definite situations of the present and to probable exigencies of the future; and in the further fact that his is a spirit of open-mindedness born of improvement as inherent in scientific work. The enhancement of these qualities in the coming engineer is a particular task of the engineering schools; but they must go farther than heretofore in equipping engineers for their work, if it is to be lifted from that of routine to that of constructive leadership. Although it must be the aim to help each engineering student to make his maximum contribution in the common service, the engineering school must cultivate that element in his personality through which he will reach the highest level of usefulness. Without neglecting to teach the necessity for united and correlated action, the instruction must emphasize individuality. It must draw out what is best in each one, searching always for means to promote the good, and eradicating those elements which would oppose true service. The schools have merely arrived at the gateway of character building, and must now discover paths which lead to trees bearing wholesome fruit. -M. W.
