St. Louis engineers, was to pick on J. W. Woermann, who had so successfully conducted the old publication. This gentleman having removed to Chicago, the undersigned was chosen as his illogical successor. He tackled the job with misgivings, but found it rather to his liking, as it afforded him an outlet for some of his youthful exuberance. In looking over his office file, the Editor is inclined to feel fairly well satisfied with the year's work. A modest sixteen pages, printed on "economical" paper, has been gradually improved until some rather complimentary expressions have been received from people who know a good Journal when they see one. Financially, we have not quite realized the mark we set for ourselves at the beginning of the year. It was believed that the Journal could be made self-supporting. We are still of the same opinion. The year's record is as follows: TH HAT PLUS stands for courtesy, attention to ¶ With a most complete plant, covering 12,000 Britt Printing & Publishing Co. Olive 4822-4823 S. W. Cor. Walnut-Ninth Central 3006 Detroit Graphite Company DETROIT, U. S. A. MAKERS OF DEGRACO PAINTS All Colors for All Purposes Miscellaneous Expense, Envelopes and Postage........ Deficit. 73.95 333.33 1,965.30 $ 537.68 Average annual deficit for the old Journal about $800.00. The figures are gratifying and serve as the most effective comment on Miss Adams' capable business management. The Journal has tried to find itself during the past year and feels that it has made substantial progress during its infancy. It now enters the period of growing pains and wild oats. It's up to the membership of the Engineers' Club and Associated Societies to lead it in the way it should go. The Editor and Business Manager most earnestly solicit co-operation. Increased advertising will provide the wherewithal for material betterment, and advice, counsel and suggestion will aid in securing to the engineers of St. Louis a worthy medium of expression. Respectfully submitted, W. E. ROLFE, Chairman. STATEMENT OF THE OWNERSHIP, MANAGEMENT, CIRCULATION, ETC., REQUIRED BY THE ACT OF CONGRESS OF AUGUST 24, 1912. LOUIS FEBRUARY, 1923 "I am convinced that the Federated American Engineering Societies is contributing more to raising the standard of American engineers in the general esteem of the community than any other agency that has yet been set up. They have certainly done fine service here in Washington to the Government and the various departments, but far beyond this the Federated has awakened the American public to the great civic potentialities of the engineering profession. "I have the feeling that many engineers believe that the status of the profession is to be advanced solely through our handiwork. They do not recognize that it is one thing to do a job, but it is quite another thing to educate the public to understand who has to do it and who is the man to be called upon." -Herbert Hoover.
