First grade teachers, Worcester, Massachusetts, organized a "first grade club" in September, 1922. During that year, the club formed a class for the study of special psychological problems in first grade teaching, and last year the main effort of the club was to emphasize the importance of Education Week. The purpose, in general, of this club has been to keep before the public the needs and opportunities of the period of school life which it represents.

James L. M'Crory, Omaha, was elected president of the Nebraska the Nebraska Schoolmasters Club at its recent meeting in Lincoln. C. L. Culler, principal of the Whittier high school, Lincoln, was elected secretary-treasurer. Superintendent J. A. Doremus, Aurora, James, Skinkle, Blair, and R. R. McGee, Columbus, were elected to the membership committee. Superintendent W. G. Brooks, York, and James L. M'Crory, were elected to represent the club at the annual meeting of the N. E. A. in Washington.

Of the 125 teachers in the public schools of Montgomery, Alabama, less than one-tenth did not file application for re-election. Superintendent Harrison declares that general satisfaction with achievements of the past year has been observed not only among the teaching force but on the part of the public as well. In the past seven years, the total enrollment has nearly doubled, the attendance for 1923-24 being 8350 of which 4700 are white.

The Women's Civic Club of Seattle petitioned the board of education to reconsider its rule regarding the dropping from regular high school classes students who fail in three subjects. The petition was answered by Superintendent Cole in effect that such pupils are not dropped from school altogether, but are given another chance in classes especially provided for them with full high school credit for work successfully carried. Superintendent Cole said that nine out of ten pupils placed on probation made good, and that the scholarship of the entire student body has been improved by operation of the rule.

Horace G. Baker and Charles E. Baker, father and son, were recently graduated from the University of Iowa together. They were both elected to Phi Beta Kappa. It is believed that this is the first time since the founding of the fraternity, in 1776, that father and son have been initiated at the same time,

"Taxation The People's Business" is the title of a new book by Andrew W. Mellon, Secretary of the Treasury, which the Macmillan Company has published. The book covers: Fundamental Principles of Taxation; Treasury Policies; Revising the Taxes; Surtaxes; Taxing Energy and Initiative; Estate Taxes; Benefits of Tax Reduction; Tax Exempt Securities.

The state of Utah has a sliding scale of teachers' annual salaries. It starts at $700 for teachers having one year of training beyond high school; $850 for two years of training beyond high school; $1000 for three years of college training; $1150 for college graduates, and $1300 for those holding the master's degree.

Superintendent Anton Fischer was recently re-elected as superintendent of the Wabasha, Minnesota, city schools for a fourth term. Superintendent

There are 550,830 enrolled in the kindergartens of the United States, an increase of 44,881 in one year.

The city council and board of educa-

George W. Diehl, Coalwood, Virginia, will succeed Dr. C. C. Rossey as president of the Concord Teachers College at Athens, West Virginia. Dr. Rossey has accepted the directorship of the department of education of a New York insurance company.

Dr. Charles R. Mann, director of the American Council of Education, has been elected a member of the Board of Trustees of George Washington University.

Chicago proposes to provide 16,000 additional seats for school children by the erection of sixteen new buildings.

Ten Chicago high schools have swimming tanks and include swimming in their course of training. Minneapolis cut out swimming pools and thereby, it is said, made an annual saving of about $50,000.

The largest and most complete library of strictly educational literature in America is maintained by the United States bureau of education at Washington. On request, this library will give. information and advice regarding methods of organization, administration, cataloging, classifying, etc., for educational libraries and educational book collections.

R. H. Brown has been elected superintendent of the Morristown, Tennessee, city schools, and Superintendent J. C. Mitchell, Murfreesboro, has been reelected.

Superintendent A. J. Smith, Clarksville, Tennessee, was recently re-elected for a term of three years. He is now entering upon his eleventh year as superintendent of Clarksville schools.

The municipal authorities, Johnson City, Tennessee, have provided forty acres of land to be used as an athletic park, a site for a new high school building, and a public playground.

A primary and music supervisor will be employed in Knox County, Tennessee for the coming year.

School children of the United States saved $9,500,000 during the school year of 1922-23. This is an increase of about $3,500,000 over the preceeding year.
