Mr. B. G. Thompson is principal of the Five Point schools, four miles west of South Bend. Miss Hazel DeCouvres is assistant.

The present building was ordered by Trustee Samuel J. Krueger, and the contract was awarded to E. E. Burner and Company, of South Bend. The total cost was $8,000. Work upon same was begun in August, but it was not completed until after Christmas. The building is constructed of a very high-grade of brick, and contains two school rooms. The basement extends under the entire building.

This building is considered modern. in every detail. It is fitted with grating fountains, indoor toilets, washstands, etc. A 21-2-horsepower engine pumps the water into a large tank, where it is kept under heavy air pressure, hence it is forced into the drinking fountains and toilets. The basement contains two play rooms, one for the girls and the other for the boys. A stairway leads from each side to the main hallway.

The rooms above are fitted with adjustable seats. There is an abundance of excellent slate blackboard. Each room contains a bookcase, ventilated wardrobes, and a large supply closet. The furnishings in the two rooms are entirely new. These rooms may be thrown into one, as they are separated by a hoisting partition. They are lighted from one side only, each room being provided with large windows, and the seats are so arranged that the light is received over the left shoulders of the pupils. The floors are of the finest hard maple. A piano has been purchased with funds provided by the teachers and pupils. The patrons are greatly pleased with the present con

dition of the schools. They respond readily to whatever may be considered necessary by Mr. B. G. Thompson and his assistant.

Mr. S. H. Hall, former principal of the High School at Covington, Ind., is Superintendent of Schools at Ft. Morgan, Colo. The present year is very favorable for the further development of the schools, as Mr. Hall is receiving the active co-operation of the patrons. The victories won in athletics and in essay writing have attracted the respectful attention of the entire State. Twenty prizes have been won, including fifteen offered by local organizations, two in Northern Colorado, two State prizes, and one national prize. One of the most important new features this year is the effort to prevent deserving students from failing in other studies from enforced or other unavoidable causes. Such is done by assigning a few pupils for the second time to one teacher, who brings them up in the subjects in which they are behind. There is a most commendable spirit upon the part of the citizens as fifteen of the prizes for High School effort have been given by local organizations.

Another former Indiana educator has received deserved recognition in the East. We refer to the recent election of Prof. S. L. Heeter as superintendent of the Greater Pittsburgh schools. He has been in charge of the St. Paul schools for several years. His success there made him a formidable candidate at Pittsburgh. That he will succeed in his new position is not doubted by those who are familiar with his professional work as student,

He has entered into a contract at Pittsburgh for four years, at a salary of $9,000 per year. He will have under his supervision 2,200 teachers.

Mr. Heeter has been prominent in the N. E. A. for quite a number of years. We join his many friends in wishing him great success in his new position. We venture the prediction that he will prove himself both able and practical. The mere theorist does not rise in his profession as Mr. Heeter has done. He handles difficult situations in a tactful and practical manner. The mere theorist cannot succeed as he has done at the head of an important system of schools.

We take pleasure in quoting the following editorial from the South Bend Tribune:

"The Citizens' School League of South Bend deserves support. It is only to be regarded as a move in the right direction. It is an organization which might well have been formed years ago.

"Similar organizations might well be formed in every city, for the situation which has maintained here, and which still maintains, is not peculiar to South Bend, but general. The public is not sufficiently interested in the

educational problems of the day; in what is being done in the schools and in what might be done. It is a fact that not only in South Bend, but in cities generally, the entire school system is turned over to school officials, school boards and school authorities, with no one else giving any particular heed to the various problems which arise, save when there is momentary interest in a passing question.

"The league just organized has as its object the studying of educational problems, especially as they apply to South Bend. It is not the purpose to arouse interest in any one particular question, but to follow a given course which shall not only apply to school of the city, but to the entire school system, and which shall not be sporadic. It is not an organization calculated to fight the battles of anyone, nor to specifically oppose or particularly favor any propaganda. It is an organization which has a given purpose, and that given purpose is to awaken interest, lasting interest, in the general work of the schools of South Bend and make them more efficient through constructive effort on the part of citizens.

"Through committees, the efforts of which shall be confined to the various school districts, it is believed that the movement can be general in character and yet specific in result. It is proposed to, from time to time, work through special committees, a point made clear in the announcement that there is to be a legislative committee, the duty of which will be to secure, that is, make an effort to secure, such legislation as will benefit the schools. of South Bend.
