Excerpt from Reminiscences of Walt Whitman: With Extracts From His Letters and Remarks on His Writings

It is enormously difficult to write on Whitman. No one has quite succeeded up to this time. This I am able to affirm from experience for some years ago I formed large collections for a work on Whitman. I have masses of ms. By me on the subject, which I found to be so formless, so obscure, so inede quate to the man, and yet so blatant and exaggerated, that I put my work aside and acknowledged to myself its failure.
