The materials for these lectures have been found in part in various histories which treat of the different periods and events, and in part in the records of the church. I have freely introduced collateral mat ters whenever they explained the position or action of the church.

The first lecture was delivered December 18, 1870, and the last April 14, 1872. This will account for some repetitions which would have been out of place in an ordinary history.
