It is a colloidal, rather than crystalline, yellowish white powder-that is insoluble in a 1% muriatic acid solution. When that acid is present in the stomach there can be no gastric disturbance.

A-f-sal should be used in doses of ten to thirty grains. In chronic cases, requiring from six months to a year of treatment the number of doses should yield the daily amounts of from 90 to 120 grains. In acute cases, the number of doses should be increased so as to yield from 300 to 360 grains per day.

Its chologogue property at times demands the use of an astringent in conjunction. Use equal amounts of bismuth subgallate with the a-f-sal; or reduce the dosage of a-f-sal to the point of toleration -which soon permits increased amounts to be used in comfort.

"The fact was made plain that the consensus of opinion of medical writers representing the teaching of medcine, was to the effect that salicylate of sodium and other salicylates do not influence the duration of acute articular rheumatism. This was illustrated by a quotation from the works of one universally recognized and highly respected authority, Osler's 'Practice,' page 277:

'Salicyl compounds, which were regarded so long as specific in the disease, are now known to act chiefly by relieving pain. R. P. Howard's elaborate analyses show that they do not influence the duration of the disease.'

"In evidence that it is not the pain relieving or analgetic properties of the acetylmethylene-disalicylic acid that cause the rapid subsidence of the swelling and fever and the consequent abatement of the pain, but that the duration of the attack of acute inflammatory rheumatism could be curtailed, and that the recovery would not have occurred just as promptly without medical aid, I submitted in evidence the clinical report on three cases, two of whom presented a most positive history of joint rheumatism from past generations.

"During every year of the past ten they had both been most persistently subjected to severe recurrent attacks of articular rheumatism, in the acute form, averaging a duration of four weeks and an interval of recurrence of every three or four months. * * Those patients, and another one almost exactly similar in character, have not had one recurrent attack during the past year! Two of them did have the suggestion of an approaching attack, but the prompt use of full doses of acetyl-methylene-disalicylic acid prevented any recurrence.

"It is the importance of this fact in so pronouncedly increasing the interval between attacks that proves the reliability of my statement that in the chemical composition of acetyl-methylene-disalicylic acid we have a veritable antitoxin especially destructive to the rheumatic poison."-Abstract from the New York Medical Journal, Jan. 13, 1912.

"It used to be said that the cure of acute or inflammatory rheumatism is 'six weeks.' To-day it can be said that the cure is in the destruction of the micro-organism or specific materies morbi, circulating in the fluids of the body-which causes the morbid processes.

* In my hands, a-f-sal has been found more efficacious than salicylate of sodium; while at the same time it is better borne by the stomach and far more tolerated by the heart. It being a urinary antiseptic caused me to use it in the treatment of gonorrhoea and gleet. I find that old cases of gleet are benefited better than acute cases. There was an absence of cordee."-See Medical Council, Sept., 1910.

"In cases of inflammatory rheumatism, where the patients were treated by the free use of the a-f-sal, to the point of free purgation during the first day, it usually caused a subsidence of the inflammatory swellings on the following day."-See Medical Review of Reviews, June, 1912.

A-F-SAL, A-S-PHEN, IODOMUTH and GUAIALIN are true chemical compounds capable of standardization and can be definitely identified by specific test. Their comparative freedom of poisonous nature and curative properties enables them to yield better results that the competing products of the Pharmacopoeia. The good results accomplished from their use, establishes for them a value that compares favorably with the world's best therapeutic agents. Physicians Approve of My
Work for Women

I wish every physician to know what my personal work for women really is, and does, because physicians who fully understand it frankly welcome my help-they send me hundreds of patients.

Every physician has cases in which an individual, scientific personally directed course in proper exercise, breathing, bathing and diet would greatly assist to build up.

My exercises will materially help your cases of Chronic Constipation, Torpid Liver, Indigestion, Anemia, Neurasthenia, Weakened Heart Muscles, Undeveloped Lungs, Poor Circulation, Uterine Displacement, increase of oxygen-carrying power of the blood, by building up and strengthening the physical and nervous system.

I teach women how to walk, how to stand correctly, how to breathe, how to exercise normally, so that no organ is displaced by over or improper exercise or imperfect poise.

The mental interest and incentive developed by the individual lessons dispels that languor and indifference which physicians often find hard to cope with.

I study each pupil's special requirements, and prescribe for her individually, just as you prescribe for your patients. I give no promiscuous exercise, but direct each woman according to her needs and her strength. I have spent years in the study of anatomy and physi. ology, and accept no cases where pronounced pathological conditions are present, as I know the possibilities of my work and I know its limitations.

In many cases I insist that the pupil have the consent and advice of her physician; in others, I require a regular weekly examination by her physician.

For 12 years I gave personal instructions to women before attempting instructions by mail. Upon request, I will send you, with information concerning my work, any one of the following lectures: A Good Figure; Circulation; Body Manikin and Position of Vital Organs Ideals and Privileges of Woman; Character as Expressed in the Body; Mind Over Matter-the Nervous System-Effect of Habit Upon Life Foods; Self Sufficiency-Mental Poise; Motherhood; The Vital Organs-Their Use and Abuse.

SUSANNA COCROFT, Dept. 96, 624 Michigan Ave., Chicago
Miss Cocroft has perhaps had a wider experience than any woman in
America in prescribing remedial exercise for women.
