"As I understand it," said the heathen, "you propose to civilize me." "Exactly so." "You propose to get me out of habits of idleness and teach me to work." "That is the idea." "And then lead me to simplify my methods and invent things to make my work lighter." "Yes." "And next I will become ambitious to get rich, so that I won't have to work at all." "Naturally." "Well, what's the use of taking such a round-about way of getting just where I started? I don't have to work now."

The Limit of Accuracy Langsdorf puts it this way. Suppose we measure a given rectangle, using the best measuring stick at our disposal, and find it to be 37.82 centimeters by 6.47 centimeters. We admit a possible error in the last figure. Now let us compute the area of the rectangle.

37.82

6.47

26474

15128

22692

244.6954 sq. cm.

If the 2 and 7 in the original measurements are admittedly inaccurate, it is evident that their inaccuracy influences the result of each multiplication in which they may be used. Follow it through and it will be apparent that the accuracy of all figures in the result is in question except the first two.

Monkey cages will line the first-floor walls and a cage 16x35 feet for educated monkeys will be in the center. Offices for the Zoo Board will be on the second floor. St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Now let's go upstairs; 's something awful funny up there.

"Wood Preserving News" presents a list of seven sub-committees of the Wood Preservation Committee of the A.R.E.A. We note with concern that the name of Dr. H. von Schrenk, well known to St. Louis engineers, appears on only six of these committees. What's the matter with that fellow, anyway? He must be losing his popularity.
